I tend to answer the question “What is Pilates?” with a long-winded response about who is Pilates that makes people flee my presence.
Then I’m running after them like “WAIT! I HAVEN’T EVEN GOTTEN TO THE PART ABOUT HOSPITAL BEDS YET! LET ME SEE YOUR SPINE!!!!!!
Seriously, it’s a problem, you guys! I have real difficulty answering this question.
Also, on an unrelated note, my social distancing grooming habits have descended into madness. And by “madness,” I mean sometimes I wear pants. But only for formal events like watching Tiger King on Netflix.
Anyway, since I’ve had all this unexpected free time, I decided to make a bulleted list that attempts to answer the question “What is Pilates?” in my own words in a way that hopefully won’t have people sprinting away from me at top speed. Thus, I give you—
Julie’s (Non-crazy) Pilates Definition
Pilates improves strength, flexibility, & corrects muscle imbalances.
Pilates requires your mind to work as hard—or harder—than your muscles.
Pilates teaches you to breathe deeply & mindfully.
Pilates can be done by anyone at any level.
While Pilates can involve apparatus & props, the 34 central exercises require nothing but a small amount of floor space.
Pilates emphasizes quality over quantity. 10 ab curls with good form & a focused mind yield better results than a 1,000 ab curls cranked out while zoning out.
Pilates is simple, yet amazingly (sometimes maddeningly) complex.
Pilates continues to reveal new things about your body, even after years of practice.
After 10 sessions you turn into a mermaid
Totally true. You get a seashell bra & everything.😉
